APERTURA STRIKES A CHORD AT WALES MILLENNIUM CENTRE

Knauf Drywall’s Apertura perforated plasterboard was given a key role at the Wales Millennium Centre after architects, Capita Percy Thomas selected it as the ceiling finish in the principal public areas of the building.

The Wales Millennium Centre is a highly acclaimed performing arts complex on Cardiff Bay’s waterfront. The 31,500m² centre boasts two theatres, two dance studios, residential accommodation, recording studios, shops, cafes and restaurants and function rooms.

Bristol-based sub contractors GHT Plastering Services Ltd installed 2,000m² of Knauf Apertura plasterboard in the ceilings of the centre’s north and south public concourse areas, to complement the high quality aesthetic requirements of the building and to satisfy stringent acoustic demands. The concourse features restaurants, shops and theatre entrances. It is a meeting place where visitors can watch impromptu free music and drama performances and enjoy the arts in a relaxed, informal setting.

Knauf Apertura is a high performance perforated plasterboard, supplied backed with an acoustic fleece and four sharp-cut edges to achieve a unique seamless finish when jointed with Knauf Uniflott.

Main contractors Sir Robert McAlpine and GHT achieved a curved metal framework using Knauf Apertura Ceiling System to support the 10-13m high ceilings in the concourse area and shaped Apertura boards to follow the contours of the Knauf hanging system.

Knauf Apertura not only achieves an attractive finish but also provides high performance acoustic absorption and minimises reverberation throughout the concourse area of the centre. Knauf Apertura circular 8/18 was used in the concourse to enable a reverberation time of 1.5 seconds to be achieved to satisfy speech intelligibility requirements.
