KNAUF DRYWALL PROVIDES ‘SOUND’ ROOMS FOR STUDENTS
A sound night’s sleep awaits students moving into a new development in
the heart of Cardiff’s vibrant city centre, thanks to the installation of Knauf Drywall’s Soundshield throughout this large complex.
At 21 storeys high, Ty Pont Haearn is one of the tallest buildings in Cardiff. The Unite Group development will accommodate 660 full time students. The site is close to Cardiff University and the University of Wales Institute, Cardiff.
Due for completion by main contractor Carillion in September 2005, Ty Pont Haearn has 17 floors dedicated to student accommodation with 643 en-suite rooms, 144 kitchens plus storerooms. It is situated above a four-storey public car park, making parking easy for friends and family.
Sub contractor Baris installed 50,000m² of Knauf plasterboard and systems throughout. David Mellis for Baris explains: “We involved Knauf Drywall from the start, taking advantage of its technical team’s specialist advice on design and utilising the superior back up service available.”
The site incorporates many of Knauf Drywall’s diverse range of plasterboard solutions that have been specifically designed to satisfy a variety of dry-lining applications.
With up to 660 students in residence, it was important to provide a relatively soundproof environment where students can study and relax without being disturbed.
Knauf Drywall’s Soundshield is ideal for use in residential areas where sound reduction is important. It is a high performance dense plasterboard with outstanding acoustic performance making it particularly suitable for the control of airborne and flanking sound transmission. It is available in lengths of 2,400mm, 2,700mm and 3,000mm and thicknesses of 12.5mm and 15mm.
Up to 90% of the available wall space throughout Ty Pont Haearn has been fitted with 12.5mm and 15mm Soundshield plasterboard fixed to 70mm Knauf C-Studs and high performance Twin Frame Partitions to enhance sound reduction values.
Knauf 12.5mm Moistureshield is in place throughout all the wet areas of the building, providing protection in internal areas of high humidity. It is available in lengths of 2,400mm, 2,700mm and 3,000mm.
Knauf’s Shaftwall system has been used with Fireshield for the stairwells and lift shafts. This specialist steel frame and plasterboard system has been designed to be built wholly from one side to facilitate lift and service shaft construction.
Fireshield is available in thicknesses of 12.5mm and 15mm and offers superior fire protection. Knauf Core Board is used in conjunction with the Knauf Shaftwall system on the shaft side, because of its fire and moisture resistance qualities.
