A skills centre in York has been recognised for its environmentally-friendly building credentials. The International Green Apple Awards 2008 for the Built Environment and Architectural Heritage saw City of York council recognised for the energy-efficient nature of the Danesgate Skills Centre at Fulford Cross.
George Sands, sustainability engineer at the council, expressed his pleasure at the bronze award.
"I'm delighted that the Danesgate Skills Centre has received this prestigious award.
"The council is committed to reducing its carbon footprint through sustainability and fantastic that this has been recognised by an international organisation," he commented.
Features of the building, created using the flat-pack method of construction, include a Hoval bio-mass boiler, the first to be adopted by the council.
Brian Berry, director of external affairs for the Federation of Master Builders, commented earlier this year that flat-pack homes may not be the most energy-efficient house-building method, as they require transportation around the country.
