New health and safety report targets worker involvement

2010-07-13
A new health and safety report by the Strategic Forum for Construction highlights the importance of worker involvement and may lead to better standards for those working with plasterboard or drywall.

The study found employee participation in decision-making related to risks in the workplace could raise health and safety performance in the construction industry.

Stronger personal motivation might also result from input in such management decisions, as employees like plasterboarders - who may only be engaged in one small part of a construction - could feel they are more integral to the project as a whole.

Made up of six representatives from the building trade, the group recommends varying strategies for different development sites, as large works might require more formal consultation to ensure participation throughout an organisation.

Recent data released by the Health and Safety Executive found plasterboard to be among the tasks most associated with muscular-skeletal injuries sustained in the workplace. ADNFCR-8000206-ID-19888200-ADNFCR
