Recycling gets a boost in London
2010-07-14
The London Community Resource Network has been awarded £8 million by the London Waste and Recycling Board to set up a new network to help the city reuse articles that would otherwise be thrown away. It is hoped the money, which will be distributed among more than 35 organisations across the capital, will support existing efforts to reduce landfill by aiding people to recycle unwanted household items such as furniture, appliances and decorations.
Organisers describe it as a "one stop shop for refuse collections, restoration and redistribution", bringing together disparate services to provide an integrated approach to London's waste disposal problem.
Mayor Boris Johnson hopes the funding, which was allocated on Monday (July 12th), will remove some of the cost barriers to improving recycling provision.
Referred to by some as the 'dustbin of Europe', Britain produces more landfill waste than any other European country, with the capital alone committing 65,000 tonnes to the ground every year.
