Local energy may make Britain more eco-friendly

2010-07-12
Demand for local energy production may improve the UK's carbon footprint, according to one sustainability specialist.

Nick Medic, head of communications at Renewables UK, suggests European emissions-cutting targets and intensive use of fuel will drive demand for locally sourced energy supplies.

The power expert argues energy security will do much to encourage the development of British-based industry to supply the national market, like offshore wind farms.

Environmentally-friendly objectives, such as meeting fuel needs using around 40 per cent low-carbon sources like renewables and nuclear power, should help Britain improve its ecological performance.

Last year, sustainable provision was 17 per cent higher than in 2007, with total generation in this sector standing at 25,222GWh, according to statistics from the Department of Energy and Climate Change.

As a percentage of all electricity generated, renewables made up 6.7 per cent in 2009, up from 5.6 per cent in 2008. ADNFCR-8000206-ID-19885835-ADNFCR
