Neighbourhood schemes could boost Britain's carbon reduction

Community-based projects to encourage eco-friendly home renovations may increase uptake and reduce costs, according to one low carbon specialist.

The Sustainable Development Commission recently published a report claiming failure to increase energy efficiency will have a negative impact on more than just utility bills and the environment.

Substandard homes, combined with congestion, lack of access to green spaces and dangerous roads have a devastating effect on the nation's health and neighbourhood improvements could effectively address these issues, argues the study.

Drywall may contribute to air-purification, leading to healthier lungs, especially among vulnerable children and older people.

Stewart Davies, business commissioner at the green organisation, commented: "People want to live in places that feel safe, homes that are affordable to heat and neighbourhoods that are resilient to extreme weather."
