News for construction firms: Eco-building 'set to grow'

Britain still has a long way to go in order to meet green living targets, an expert has argued.Chris Smith, managing director of Erimus Housing, a social housing group in Middlesbrough, told local newspaper the Evening Gazette that further steps need to be taken in order to meet carbon reduction targets.
She noted that efficient technologies such as underfloor heating and air source heat pumps can be used in building projects to improve overall efficiency.
Ms Smith argued that there is continuing debate in the industry over how to meet carbon targets in the next six years.
"New communities have more opportunity to build in green measures," she said, noting that items such as combined heat and power units may be used more by the group.
However, infrastructure, costs and supply chains around such new technologies have not yet matured well, she said, adding that while building new green properties is becoming the norm, retro-fitting older properties remains a challenge.
Earlier this week, director at the National Home Improvement Council Andrew Leech argued that when people opt to make home improvements they should consider ways to boost the energy efficiency of their home at the same time.
