Expert: Construction worries remain, despite improvement

2010-04-23
Those working in the construction trade remain concerned about the outlook for the rest of the year, despite figures showing a drop in the number of insolvencies in the sector, an expert has said.

Brian Berry, director of external affairs at the Federation of Master Builders, said that while there has been a slight improvement, there are "still a lot of concerns" for the rest of the year.

He said that a prime issue, particularly for small building firms, is that unemployment levels across the country are rising, so people have less money to spend on home improvements.

Mr Berry added that there has been a drop in the level of work coming from local authorities, and that concerns remain that this trend will continue after the election, as more cuts in local authority spending are expected.

The Federation of Master Builders revealed earlier this month that 30 per cent of building companies surveyed expect their workloads to fall this year.
