Obama appointment could increase UK construction jobs
2008-11-12
Many thousands of engineering and construction jobs could emerge in the UK as the government should be looking to duplicate the green ideas of US president-elect Barack Obama, according to the Environmental Industries Commission (EIC).By 2020, Mr Obama is planning on investing $150 billion (£95.7 billion) in the renewable and clean energy sector.
However, according to the chairman of the EIC, Adrian Wilkes, the UK must keep pace with the US in green energy and construction projects so to not lose out on jobs.
Mr Wilkes said: "The government must back UK companies to seize the opportunity to lead the world in environmental technologies, or else millions of jobs that could have been created in the UK will go abroad to countries like the US that are putting in place comprehensive support programmes."
Ahead of the latest interest rate cut, which saw the rate cut by 1.5 per cent, the Home Builders Federation called for a one per cent cut, with a further reduction of two per cent in the near future.
