Companies will report emissions

2008-10-28
Construction companies could be obliged to reveal their carbon emissions following the government setting down an amendment to the Climate Change Bill.

The amendment to the bill making its way through Parliament, could lead to the creation of a standard system of reporting emissions, which would force companies to decrease their environmental impact, according to minister for climate change Joan Ruddock.

She told the Daily Telegraph: "This will allow companies to demonstrate their green credentials and provide transparency for investors and consumers. It aims to stimulate businesses to reduce their carbon footprint and work towards a productive low carbon future."

Last year the UK Green Building Council was set up to improve the construction industry's environmental performance.

At the time, Peter Rogers, chair and co-founder said what the priorities of the construction industry in terms of environment should be.

He said: "These need to be the three zeros - zero carbon, zero water and zero waste."
