Lawrence Waterman, head of health and safety with the Olympic Delivery Authority, confirmed that it was working with the relevant authorities to implement protective measures, with a view to work being re-started over the next few days.
"The health and safety of the workforce is our number one priority and we have taken the precautionary measure of stopping work in this area," he said.
A recent report in the Independent revealed that public money could be entirely responsible for the construction of the Olympic Village after the original backer faced difficulties securing funding.
