Work begins on new Liverpool stadium

2008-06-25
The new Liverpool stadium is now under construction, it has been revealed.

Some 60,000 fans are to be housed by the venue, with planning permission still to be approved in order to take this figure to 73,000.

Construction firm Laing O'Rourke is undertaking the development, which is due to complete by August 2011.

George Gillett, co-chair of the club, says: "This is a significant milestone for the club."

He adds: "I am delighted that the design received full planning consent and that we are now on site."

Long-term supporters of the club may welcome the news that a Kop stand with capacity for 18,000 fans is included in the plans.

Some £350 million in all is expected to be spent on the three-year construction of the new stadium.

The official Liverpool FC website adds that the adjacent site of the existing Anfield stadium is anticipated to be redeveloped as part of a mixed-use facility comprising a club shop, banqueting hall and conference accommodation.
