New stadium proposal for Portsmouth FC

2008-06-23
A new 36,000-seater stadium could be established by Portsmouth Football Club, it has emerged.

Proposals for the new ground, which would replace Fratton Park, situate it in the city's naval dockyards area and forecast that construction will commence in 2010.

"The club will be playing a big part in the regeneration of the city and our fans will have the very best in terms of facilities and amenities as well as an excellent viewing experience," said Peter Storrie, chief executive of Portsmouth Football Club.

Mr Storrie described the stadium, which would incorporate a naval diving and training facility and an indoor exhibition centre and arena, as "perfection".

To be designed by Herzof & de Meuron, the new plans replace previous designs for a new stadium that were halted by the Ministry of Defence.

Several thousand jobs are expected to be generated through the construction project.

Portsmouth's official website states that a £500 million city centre redevelopment project is to bring two anchor stores and 80 new retail brands to the city.ADNFCR-8000206-ID-18651146-ADNFCR
