Waste Management

Collecting waste plasterboard

Recycling plasterboard waste from residential sites

Recent European legislation has made it more difficult, and expensive, to dispose of waste plasterboard into landfill sites. Our residential site collection scheme ensures that contractors’ plasterboard waste is instead recycled and re-used in the manufacture of new product.

Easily placed 500Kg polythene bulk bags are used to segregate Knauf Drywall plasterboard waste on-site. This enables us to accurately monitor the source of

the waste being returned and to ensure that it is free from contamination. We can then help the contractor to be as efficient as possible, further reducing cost and wastage.

  • A sustainable solution to deal with your waste plasterboard via a closed loop system
  • Our dedicated teams advise on best practice detailing and specification to minimise wastage

Working with the environment

As well as recycling plasterboard waste from sites, our ongoing commitment to the environment and sustainability means that Knauf Drywall utilises recycled materials within the production of new products wherever possible.

In making plasterboard, the core raw material is gypsum. There are a number of different types of gypsum, both natural and synthetic. We aim to use 100% synthetic gypsum in our plasterboard as this comes from the cleaning process of coal-fired Power Stations, or similar industrial processes.

The second key product used in the manufacture of plasterboard is the paper liner and we strive to only use paper manufactured from recycled materials. We are committed to a reduction in the use of natural resources in all areas.

The process - from site to factory

The process

Filling the bags

Waste Knauf plasterboard is segregated into the bulk bags provided, which should be situated close to the workplace or in a dedicated area of the site.

Care is taken to ensure that the waste Knauf plasterboard is clean and uncontaminated with other waste, and compacted as much as possible. Contamination in the bags can mean recycling is not feasible.

A separate bulk bag is often used for dedicated Knauf metal section waste, which can also be recycled.

Collecting the bags

A dedicated phone number is provided to arrange collection of full bags, and to order new ones. Each site is registered and each bag has an individual number which we track throughout the process.

We send each Housebuilder regular reports on the waste management performance of their sites.

Recycled gypsum ready for re-use

Plasterboard Recycling Station

Knauf Drywall has dedicated plasterboard recycling stations at each of our plasterboard production sites.

The waste plasterboard will firstly have the paper liner removed and separated ready for recycling.

The next stage is to crush the gypsum core to a suitable particle size ready for inclusion into the manufacturing process at Knauf Drywall.

Knauf Drywall plasterboard factory

Knauf Drywall’s plasterboard plants in the UK are amongst the fastest and most sophisticated in Europe. They are designed to take recycled gypsum as a normal part of the production process, resulting in a superb quality board.
